Work Permit

Eligibility

There are specific requirements you need to meet depending on where you are when you apply for your work permit. But regardless of where you apply or which type of work permit you apply for, you must

  • Prove to an officer that you will leave Canada when your work permit expires;

  • Show that you have enough money to take care of yourself and your family members during your stay in Canada and to return home;

  • Obey the law and have no record of criminal activity (we may ask you to give us a police clearance certificate);

  • Not be a danger to Canada’s security;

  • Be in good health and have a medical exam, if needed;

  • Not plan to work for an employer listed with the status “ineligible” on the list of employers who failed to comply with the conditions;

  • Not plan to work for an employer who, on a regular basis, offers striptease, erotic dance, escort services or erotic massages; and

  • Give the officer any other documents they ask for to prove you can enter the country.

 

Document Checklist

  • Application for Work Permit made outside of Canada (IMM1295)

  • Family information Form (IMM5707)

  • Fee payment in an acceptable format

  • A photocopy of the information page of your valid passport or travel document

  • Two photos meeting the requirements of the Visa application photograph specifications,link On the back of the two photos, write your name and date of birth. 

  • Proof of current immigration status

  • Photocopy of your Marriage License/Certificate

  • Proof indicating you meet the requirements of the job being offered.

  • A copy of the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) provided by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) to your employer, and a copy of your job offer from your prospective employer. Or an Offer of Employment to a Foreign National Employer from a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)(either an IMM5802 or the Offer of Employment ID number)

  • If working in Quebec, provide evidence of a valid Certificate d’acceptation du Quebec (CAQ)

  • If you area a Provincial Nominee and have an Offer of Employment to a Foreign National Exempt from a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)(either an IMM5802 or the Offer of Employment ID number) from an employer in the province or territory that nominated you, provide a copy of the nomination letter issued by the province or territory that nominated you and a R204c) letter issued by the province or territory.

  • If applying for a post-graduation work permit, submit proof that you have completed all the requirements of your program of study

  • Any additional documents required by the responsible visa office.
